I’m a beginner weaver, working on a 32” Ashford 8 shaft table loom, adventuring into the world of twills, my favorite weave structure. I thought I’d start with Tuscan twill tea towels. I did some sampling to test my beat and such. Seems like I’m getting a nice cloth at 20 ppi with a sett of 20 epi. The fabric looks good. The selvages are straight and look neat but slightly more draw-in than I thought. I am following Jane’s recommendation for the weaving sequence (throw, beat open shed, change shed, replace beater). I cut my sample off the loom to feel the cloth and measure my epi. I am getting about 1.5 inches total draw in. I read that more draw in is expected with twills due to the structure of the interlacement of warp and weft. Is this a normal amount to see before wet finishing etc? Any guidance is appreciated!
Welcome to weaving Taylor!
This sounds about right for your draw in for total of both sides together. This should take you close to the 19" wide after washing. Great for you for doing some sampling first! I absolutely love the colours in this kit.
Thank you! I was looking at the pattern for the final width after wet setting and it shows that 19” so I feel like I’m on track too! I’m doing a set of these towels for my house prior to making the kit for a gift for a friend who recently moved to Italy. Thanks again for the guidance!
