I'm making scarves using 8/2 cotton as warp and have some beautiful baby alpaca as warp. I'd like to do them up in a broken twill and just can't decide on the sett for this project. I'm thinking about 20epi but will it be too loose? Should I go to 24? or weave a bit at 20 and if it looks to loose, reslay at 24? Please help!
Hello Janice - I am not an expert on this at all, but I would suggest that an epi of less than 20 would be more suitable, unless the alpaca yarn is very fine. I have found with some scarves I have woven at 20epi in 8/2 cotton, they lack a certain softness due to the sett being too dense, if you know what I mean. The fact that you are using an alpaca weft would presumably mean there would be some fulling of the fibres when washed, which would work well with a looser weave. I am sure there are more experienced weavers out there who can offer better advice, but as you had not had any other replies, I am offering my penny’s worth!
Thank you! I think I'll sley the reed at 18 epi and do a test
