S4-Episode 5 - Large Threadings Twill Gamp
This sections, like all the other sections since season 1, has been a real eye opener. Jane's explanation of Unit Substitution and Advancing threading alone, was a light bulb moment. It really helped with my treadling as well because I could visualize. For once in my life, I am looking forward to Profile Drafting. If anyone can help me understand it, it will be Jane. Also, I'm glad you mentioned to wait til after the wash to judge the cloth. I am forever thinking, "oh the horror."
BTW, thank you Jane. For once, my multiple warp chains were dressed in the correct order. (knock on wood. treats for the Gremlins) Thank you!
NC I also mix up my multiple warp chains! Is there a tip to help keep them in order?
If you do a search “multiple warp chain” Jane answers my question. Good luck! It’s helped a lot. Someone else had her tips as well which I used as well.
Sandra,
I would like to make the gamp larger to see the patterns repeated. I plan to double the number of black threads in the warp but keep the dividers at 4 threads, then repeat each section pattern (#1 Ms&Ws x 2) weaving the divider. Will this work okay? Are there any issues I need to be aware of when doubling the pattern?
In the show and tell video, Jane showed two pieces 15"x15" that were still attached ( done on white warp). Each one was in a different pattern. How did she do this? Remove the red dividers in the warp and rethread the heddles? If you can explain how she did them I would appreciate it very much as I would like to do large individual samples of each of the 5 patterns.
Thank you kindly. Happy New Year!

Repeating the pattern will work Lee, as long as your loom is wide enough to hold it and you have twice as much weft on hand. That is going to be a huge sample! The two pieces you are referring to are on a white warp - not the sample warp - and Jane would have used the same threading in both and changed her pattern by using a different tie-up. You could do that with individual samples of each of the different threadings - combining your idea of doubling the width of the sample and adjusting your threading width for each sample. I would want to draw them out to see how the design looks - either on paper or Fiberworks to see what the final sample would look like. Keep us posted!
Sandra,
What a brilliant suggestion you had in advising me to use Fiberworks to recreate this gamp in doubling the size! I learned how to use the software and it helped me understand what I was aiming to do. Now to learn how to upload pictures of the results!

That is wonderful news, Lee. You've made my day!!
