I've successfully woven two double weave blankets! I'm thrilled. However, in both projects, the tension on the bottom layer started to sag as the weaving progressed. It got increasingly looser as the weaving continued. I was able to manage ii but would like to avoid this situation in the future.
Any ideas on why this happened and how to avoid it or correct it?
Thanks for any ideas.

Warp Tension on a Double Weave Banket
If you think of the length of fabric wrapping around the cloth beam, the bottom layer is always traveling a shorter path than the top layer, as the top layer goes around all previous layers plus the bottom layer. So the top layer will end up tighter and the bottom layer sloppy. What I've done is cut off and re-tensioned between every blanket on a multiple double-width blanket warp. It requires extra warp length, but ensures more consistent tension, as when you start the blanket (newly tied on) the tension is fine. It's only as the layers add up that the bottom gets sloppy.
Another thing I have done (while weaving a longer blanket) is unwind the cloth beam, put a fold in the lower layer to bunch it up (hard to describe) and then rewound the cloth onto the beam, being sure to wind tightly as I go. That can help. Wool is forgiving, so the wet finishing process will tidy up and wrinkles in the cloth.
Best of luck with your next double width blanket project!
Thank you! Yes, your explanation on the why the warp sags makes total sense to me and it was very clear. I will definitely try your suggestions. I like the idea of bunching up the lower level into the cloth beam to shorten it's length to match the top layer. I agree. Wool is very forgiving and the blankets I've woven and wet finish are perfectly fine.
Thanks so much.
