Rebecca Logan will take you down a rabbit hole named Shadow Weave and you will be amazed by what you can create after taking in all the information for Shadow Weave on 4 & 8 shaft looms! Share your journey and ask questions in this thread!
Season 8 Episode 2 Shadow Weave, Atwater to Powell
Rebecca, Thank you so much for this in depth look at shadow weave. I absolutely love the scarf project and I'm thinking of adapting the 8 shaft gamp for a scarf as well Really beautiful design.
I wonder if bamboo would be too slippery for this pattern. Now that the weather is finally warming, I'd love to have the scarf in something lighter.
I'm also thinking of shadow weave for an upholstery project, perhaps in a mercerized cotton. So much fun!
I've actually woven shadow weave in Jane's 12 gauge Bambu, and loved the result. Just make sure you're using the plain weave suggested sett for a stable fabric.
Shadow weave would be amazing for upholstery! Go for it.
Rebecca, Thank you so much for all of the work you put into this episode.
For me, it is easier to visualize the profile draft in the Atwater method...am I missing something?
Some brains will process and interpret the Atwater system easier (like yours does), and some the Powell system. I'm just glad there are two systems available for the same structure, giving people who struggle with one of them a chance to try the other. Both systems give you the same result, they're just different ways of getting to it. That's one of the amazing things about weaving shadow weave! Stick with what works for you, and you're golden.
Rebecca, I finally "get it" LOL. I was able to use Fiberwords to create an 8 shaft Shadow Weave draft to use for some placemats and I even figured out how to use the shaft shuffler to convert from Atwater to Powell...so proud of myself. I will put on enough warp for 4 placemats for me and 6 for a gift for my niece.
I will weave mine first to play with weft colors etc. Plan on using 22/2 cottolin and 20 epi.
I am attaching a photo of my wif file.

Good for you! I'm so glad it worked out for you, and look forward to seeing your fabric.
Thanks Rebecca,
I did notice an incorrect treadle in my wif file that I snapped the photo of. I've fixed it.
I was not very much in love with Shadow weave on previous season, so was not sure if I try this time or not. Wow!!! I love weaving the gamp you created. Thank you very much for introducing and explaining so well.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I found the gamp so much fun to weave, so I'm glad to hear others are enjoying it, too.
I finished these placemats for my dear niece Jamie yesterday. I had so much fun with the Shadow Weave lesson and as I stated above, I was able to design these and use the shaft shuffler on Fiberworks per Rebecca's wonderful directions. These are 8 shaft Shadow Weave. The warp and weft are 22/2 cottolin at 20epi.
My intention was to weave 6 placemats for Jamie and 4 for me....well, somehow, I managed to mess up the math in planning and only had enough warp for 9 woven placemats. I literally wove until the back tie on bar was up against the heddles...TG I was able to complete the 9th mat. So, Jamie will get 6 and I am left with 3.

These look really long in the photograph, but in real life they're 16 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches (after washing and drying). My niece has a longish but narrow table and the size is woven to fit 6 on her table at the same time.
They look terrific, Cheryl!
