Totally confused! I bought the kit for Monk's Belt with Color and Weave (6 placemats, 2 scarves) and have the warp on the loom and have begun weaving. Finished dimensions are 13" wide x 17'" long. In the reed, 16.5". That is all fine.
I'm getting 13 ppl on placemat 1. The draft as shown gives 154 picks. My placemat would be 16.5" x 11.7" before washing - with the hems on top and bottom! I assume I just keep weaving the center until I'm half way to about 18", which will be many, many more picks than shown.
Am I doing something wrong? Help, please.
Placemat sizes
Has anyone woven placemats from this lesson? Did you have many more picks to achieve the length needed, and did draw-in and washing shrink the 16.5" width to 13"?
Hi Joanne,
I wove the project for this lesson and my finished width for a placemat was 13.25" (after washing and pressing). I don't understand how you are counting picks. Are you weaving tabby picks between each monk's belt pattern pick? So an "A" would be 4 picks, 2 pattern and 2 tabby, and each "B" would also have 4 picks. The hems are 2.5" of plain weave on each end and are in addition to the individual instructions for each placemat. Does your weaving look like the photos with the lesson? I hope this helps.
Thanks, Lana. Yes, I am adding tabby as you noted. If you wove as shown, did you end up with a placemat 13.25 x 17? I may be worried for no reason. It seems I am near half way in the treadling but not half way to a 17” length (not counting the hem.) I’ll measure the border carefully and then figure how far to the center and go from there. I am surprised at the shrinkage. 3.25” is a lot….20%?
Yes, you have helped. I’ll forge ahead. It’s slow with the 4 shuttles, but it is fun to see the pattern develop.
I'm not sure of the length on that one. I only kept one mat from that set, but I don't think any of them were too different from one another. Sometimes it really helps to check the photos, too. Please posted pictures to share when you can so we can enjoy your success. Happy weaving!
