I am just about to start weaving the Summer & Winter project but realized I have a question about the treadling. For example, in placemat 1 the main section (after the hem) starts with an "a tabby". When you go from block A to block B, however, you end up starting with a "b" tabby because the last pattern pick of block A was preceded by an "a " tabby. So does this mean that you have 2 of the same tabbies, in this case "a" when you change blocks (i.e. an "a" tabby before the last pattern shaft of block A and another "a tabby" before the first pattern pick of block B)? Hope this makes sense as I am a little confused!
Episode 8 Summer & Winter treadling
I'm weaving this project currently. I always have my "a tabby" pick weaving from the left and my "b tabby" pick weaving from the right. You always follow a pattern pick with a tabby pick. So if the tabby pick is coming from, for example, the left, I am throwing an "a tabby". If the next pattern pick will be a "B block", I will throw a "b tabby" first.
Does this make sense?
Thank you for your suggestion Cheryl. I do understand the idea of having the "a" tabby on one side of the loom and the "b" tabby on the other. The thing that is confusing me, though, is that I think Jane said that you should start with the tabby pick before the pattern pick, so when weaving pairs as in placemat # 1, I get confused when changing to Block B. For example,
Block A:
"a" tabby
1-3
"b" tabby
2-3
"a" tabby
1-3
and if continuing this unit (i.e. weaving pairs) then,
"b" tabby
1-3
"a" tabby
2-3
"b" tabby
2-3
"a" tabby
1-3
if going to Block B at this point you would do
"b" tabby
1-4
"a" tabby
2-4
"b" tabby
2-4
"a" tabby
1-4
etc.
I am therefore wondering if I am supposed to be weaving the "a" tabby when starting Block B and, if so, that would result in throwing the "a" tabby 2 times (before the last section of the A block unit and before the beginning section of the Block B unit).
I don't know if I am over thinking this or just totally confused!
If depends on which side your tabby shuttle is at the end of a block. If I have thrown the final pick for a pattern pick for a block , let’s say it was an A block and my tabby shuttle is on the left, I throw an a tabby. If my next pattern pick will start a B block, I throw a “b” tabby first and my shuttle is already on the right side and is ready for this.
Ok - I understand. I am not sure why I thought you had to start each block with the
"a" tabby. Apparently I was overthinking it!
Thank you!
