Sett alternatives for overshot

I am getting ready to start the overshot episode but I have noticed that I beat far harder than Jane seems to; this happened when I switched from a Baby Wolf to a Swedish-style loom. In any event, I was thinking of making my scarves at a closer sett so that things would be a bit more balanced. But I of course want a scarf, not upholstery fabric. Is there a range of setts, besides the recommended sett, that will still work for the scarf project?

Hi Sara - the setts Jane recommends work for all kinds of looms. My guess is that you are beating harder as you learn to use the new loom. Or, you are unintentionally beating the same way you did on your previous loom but it's not necessary on the new loom. Changing the sett probably isn't the answer but practising Jane's mantra - Throw, Beat, Change, Beater Back - might be. Keep us posted on whether this helps.

Thank you! I finally got the project started (I had to finish my monk's belt to free up the reed). My first cycle through the pattern was way too dense, but today I tried again and I think I'm doing better--I can see the pattern is squaring up. It's hard for me to beat so lightly (or more particularly, EVENLY and lightly) but I know that learning how to adjust your beat is a skill. I don't think I can share a photo here but it's quite dramatic. Hopefully I can keep it up!
