Can I substitute 8/2 cottolin for the 16/2 linen using the same sett?
Substitution for the 16/2 linen
Only if you want a much looser cloth.
Jane has a master sett chart pdf somewhere. I think under resources and pdfs?
What is I make the sett 18 epi? Will that be comparable?
I'm such a Moron today!! I read cotton not linen. Doing too much today...multitasking/procrastinating is not my friend
Jane has 16/2 Linen listed at 18epi/18ppi for twill 15 epi for PW
Cottolin 22/2 has similar numbers as 8/2 cotton so 20 twill 18 pw,
Kinda close depending on what your doing? what project are you doing?
I want to do the season 5 canvas weave sampler but substitute the cottolin for the linen as I don’t have linen and don’t want to buy it for a sampler. I was hoping my 8/2 cottolin would be a close substitution. Cottolin 22/2 is the same as cottolin 8/2, is that right? (One uses the linen way of counting and the other the cotton way?)
Oh that was fun weave. . I did that exercise in plain cotton since I didn’t have either linen or cottolin.
I don’t think you could go wrong.
I have woven towels using the same sett on 8/2 cotton, 22/2 cottolin and 16/2 linen. 20 epi worked great on all of these. They all shrank about 10% after the washer and dryer.
I am doing 16/2 linen in warp and 8/2 cotton in weft. How did you wet finish? Sounds like you put in washer and dryer? Any issues? Thank you
Thank you for your guidance. I did read many articles and looked at both Handwoven and Jane’s sett lists, but still felt a bit uncertain. I feel more confident going forward now. 😀
Hey Debra, I use my serger to cut and secure the raw edges on the towels. Throw them in the washer and then dryer.
Then I give a good steam press before hand hemming. The wrinkles in the dryer get fewer and fewer as they get used and run through washer and dryer multiple times. Sometimes I will iron them, sometimes I won't ... just depends LOL.
I've never had any problems treating my towels this way. If I baby them, they might last forever and where would be my motivation to weave more??? LOL
I have some hand towels that are over 25 years old and have been treated to my rough handling.
