I am wanting to make a poncho using canvas weave. I have warped my loom for samples using 16/2 cottolin at 16 epi. I have sampled with 8/2 tencel in the weft. . I am not getting the expected open weave that I want. I expect it is either due to sett or to material. Please advise. In the mean time, I will try using the cottolin for weft and see if I get what I’m looking for. .

Hi Marilyn, can you post a few pictures....it really helps to see what is happening. I suspect your sett it too open at 16 EPI. I would try it sett at least at 20 for 16/2 cotton. But send a pic if you can. :)

Hi Marilyn, I do think it is your sett. Because it is so open you weft is beating down a lot even if you try to beat carefully. Try increasing your sett and the cloth will be more balanced. It is so good to sample before taking on the big project. Keep us updated :)

Now I’m really confused. I changed the sett to 24 epi. In the picture, you’ll see a new sample. The top shows half using tencel and half using the cottolin. Still not showing the open weave effect I’m trying to get. The tencel gives me almost what I am looking for. I may start another warp of tencel and try this weave using it in both warp & weft.

Hi Marilyn, I would try 20 epi and 20ppi, being very careful to balance your cloth....and I'll think you'll have it. You made a giant leap from 16 to 24, that is 8 threads in the warp and 8 threads in the weft ..... a total of 16 threads in a square inch. Are you up for trying one more time. If that doesn't do it I'm hooped. Sending you tons of fabulous energy :)

Good idea! Right now, I’ve switched my warp to tencel and will try the 24 epi with that rather than the cottolin. If that doesn’t work, I’ll drop down to 20 epi. I have plenty of both on my loom so not a problem!

UPDATE: I resleyed using the 8/2 tencel at 24 epi and then wove using the same 8/2 tencel for weft. The expected results were what I got! Apparently canvas weave likes the same warp and weft materials to achieve the open weave I was looking for.

Lesson learned!! Thanks for your patience while I have been sampling and figuring this all out.
