sorry so basic -
I'm planning on weaving some small wool rugs and have just been reviewing season 3 Weft faced and you suggest for a firm rug I use tow linen. Unfortunately I have some white seine twine, not sure what weight and 8/8 navy cotton, but no tow linen. What do you suggest?

Hi Val, seine twine is strong! It would be strong enough for small rugs. Jane sells #12 seine twine in the shop and she describes it as fine and very strong!
What would be a reasonable substitute for the 4/12 tow linen? Would a n 8/4 tow linen require a different sett?
The 8/4 would require a different sett as it is somewhat thicker than the 12/4 that Jane carries. Depending on what you plan to use it for, the 12/2 Tow Linen is finer still.
I plan on using 8/4 tow with Harrisville Highland yarn. Should I change my sett from 5 to 4 since the 8/4 is thicker than 12./4? Also Jane mentions in episode 4 warping this on a table loom as a possibility. I have a Louet Jane. Will it really work on this? Thank you.
Good morning, Laurie. This is the perfect time to get out your ruler and do a wrap to decide what sett to use. You could do a review of Season 1: Episode 4. That way you will be confident with the sett you choose for weft faced with the yarns you plan to use. You will be fine weaving this on your Jane Loom!

I’ve finally got my 12/4 tow linen warped at 5 EPI, 011 in an 8 dent reed. I cannot get my weft tight enough to cover the warp. What should I do? Should I change the sett or double up my weft in the shuttle? My rug wool doesn’t look as thick as Jane’s.
Would like to try a weft face cotton bath mat.
Suggestions for size of cotton for weft, and what to use for warp, how many episodes???
You would still want to use linen for warp for strength and stability and use heavy cotton as weft. Mop cotton - which is 16/8, is a possibility. You would have to do your winding on a ruler as Jane demonstrates in Season 1: Episode 4 to establish your sett.
Yikes, I posted this same question yesterday but I can't seem to find it this morning. More coffee.
So, I'm trying to understand how to make the filled boxes that are part of the pdf where you have to have 6 tie ups which are 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/1 and then 1/2/3 against 4. As I only have 6 treadles I can't also do a plain weave tie up. I thought Jane said in the videos that you should capture the twill weaving between some plain weave to hold it in. Did I misunderstand or am I supposed to re-tie the treadles in the middle of the project to do a few plain weave lines. Nooooooo, don't tell me it's so. Please advise if I misunderstood. Thanks!! I'm trying to understand your question, Leslie. The tie-up I'm seeing is for Twill and Plain Weave. 12,23,34,14-13,24, which is 6 treadles. The only other tie-up I can see is the Krokbragd tie-up for the second sample. Can you tell me which of the samples you are trying to weave???
Hi Sandra. Sorry, I'll try to explain more clearly. On the sample sheet pdf I'm wanting to do a sampler with numbers 11 thru 17, which I believe requires 8 tie-ups doesn't it??
1/3 against 2/4 for plain weave. = 2 tie ups
1/2, 2/3,3/4,4/1 for 2/2 twill = 4 tie ups
1/2/3 against 4 for 3/1 twill = 2 tie ups
I'm looking for confirmation that you can't do all of these on a 4 shaft loom without the acrobatics of changing the tie ups mid-project. Sorry for the drama. I think I need one of those wheeled carts that mechanics use to slide under a car so I can wheel myself under the loom to change the tie-up, lol.
I'm being particularly dense this morning - still haven't had my coffee ;-) On what page on the PDF or spot in the videos do you see the 3/1 tie-up, Leslie? I haven't woven this sample and Jane is away but I simply can't see 3/1 tie-up in the PDF. Please show me where it is.
I'll call it page 3 of the weft faced pdf where there is a photo of her sample and it is numbered 1-17 with descriptions of the tie ups. Isn't the tie up of 1/2/3 against 4 called a 3/1 twill? Honestly I have no clue! But that is what I'm seeing on samples 15-17. Now those specific samples only have 6 tie ups, but I don't think I recall her talking about changing the tie-ups mid project in any of the videos. So if I want to do sample number 14, followed by 15, I would need to change my tie up. That is what I am trying to confirm. Phew!
Are you looking at a printed copy or the PDF that is currently up on the site? I’m a print person and print out copies of the drafts. I think it would help if you could send a screenshot or photo to me at [email protected] so I can see, what you are seeing. We get this sorted!
I hope i've linked it correctly here. The screenshot shows the last few of the samples and the tie-ups to make them. I think #14 shows what are called 2/2 twills and then #15 shows plain weave and a 3/1 twill (or 1,2&3 against 4). Thanks for persevering Sandra.
Thank YOU for being so patient, Leslie. I humbly apologize - it was MY brain that misfired! I read the 4 and Weft Faced in the email I received and immediately jumped to Season 4 - Weft Faced, not Season 3: Episode 4 - Weft Faced. Now I fully understand your dilemma! The only way you could solve your current situation would be to use a direct tie-up where you treadle 2 treadles at the same time. This will be challenging using the Box and Roman Key tie-up , but should be manageable but slow with the PW and Twill. With the two more challenging structures - you could weave the easy pick and then use both feet to weave the second. Hopefully, this helps you weave this amazing sample. Please keep me posted and let me know what you’ve decided. I’m here if you need anymore help and will try to not bungle it next time!
Whoa! 2 treadles at the same time! Sounds crazy and wonderful. I've just googled it and it was a brain bend but I think I understand and off I go to try it.
