Hi! I'm a brand new weaver and getting ready to warp my first Asymmetry sample. I'm reviewing Introduction to Sample One and notice that after the first sample, Jane's other samples look wider, like towels. The PDF mentions that we can weave the length as is, or turn them into towels. This is a newbie questions, I'm sure, but did Jane make her samples wider? If so, could you give some guidance? I'm looking at the Project Planning guide and see that the sample would make a napkin if left at the 12 inch-ish finished width.

What did most students end up doing? Thanks for a great class, now to just jump in and get going!

In Episode 2.3 - the third video - do you change the colors in the warp (the ones you were 'using up'), or did you simply use them in the weft, without tieing on new colors (as you did with replacing the red zinger)?

Hi, I also want to widen my samples into towels, with the original sett. I wove samples with some stash yarn and I’m staring at Jane’s kit. It’s made for a six yard warp at 15.5 inches in the reed. If I change it to 21 inches in the reed, do I just subtract a yard off the warp? Is that flawed thinking? 5.5*5 yards=27.5 inches Thank you!!

First I would like to say how much I am enjoying your on line courses. I completed the asymmetry sample as directed on a 12 dent reed, at 18 epi, sleyed 1, 2, per dent. After weaving the sample, removing the red zinger, and weaving a bit more it was time to cut the warp and re-sley at 12 epi, 1 thread per dent. I calculated 280 threads divided by 12 epi would be a 23.3 inch wide warp on my reed. I measured half of the 23.3 inch width to the right side of the middle of my reed (with a tape measure) and began re-sleying from the right side (one thread per dent). When I got to the middle of the reed I no longer had any free holes left between what had been re-sleyed and the original threads still sleyed at 18 epi in the reed. To solve this problem I measured half of the 23.3 inch width to the left of the middle of my reed and began re-sleying from the left side (one thread per dent). When I re-sleyed all of the original 18 epi threads I was left with with two empty slots in the middle of the reed. So, I had to re-sley half of the threads again to remove the two empty slots in the middle of the reed. My questions are: Is there an easier way to do this? Should I have counted out exactly 280 slots before starting to re-sley? I know I will be needing this skill further along in the course. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I am learning so much from this course! I haven’t finished these, but I’m so excited to have them off the loom. I’ll be hemming them as a set of napkins. (Also trying out posting photos).

Technical question: These images are of my towel before and after washing. As you can see, the areas of the towel where there are no stripes have shrunk more than those with stripes. I am guessing that the areas with several color changes (and the accompanying woven in ends) are denser and shrink less. Does this mean that bouclé, with its nice drape is not a good candidate for narrow striping? The samples at the beginning that were all 8/2 did not do this when washed. I am new to bouclé.

I finished my S2 Ep2 samples this week. Jane, I'm really loving these courses and your method of teaching - it is like learning from a friend who wants you to succeed!
Things I learned:
Sample 1 - Squaring a square - The squares shifted when I backed off on loom tension, but I found a happy place to measure consistently and after washing, air drying and pressing, they look square to me. (Cut off all my fringe by accident; wasn't paying attention and thank goodness for hemstitching!)

Samples 2-5 - trying to break my "everything must be symmetrical" mentality.

Sample 6 - warp at 12epi, weft is cotton Bouclé. Much stiffer than I anticipated after washing. I think I may have beat too hard.

Sample 7 - squaring a square part 2 - warp at 12epi, weft is double throws of 8/2 cotton (had to add floating selvedges). On the loom, I really liked the look of the weft-faced weaving.

Sample 8 - "never waste a warp" leftover - Found some mercerized #3 cotton crochet thread in the craft closet and used it for the weft. I had everything but red so I substituted it with pink. Almost no drape and would make a nice placemat.

Your samples look great! I just finished mine.

My Asymmetry sample. I found that coming up with designs was more difficult than I thought, even though Jane makes it look so easy. I'll be working more on my design notebook for sure! I'm used to planning everything out in advance, so doing design changes on the fly was different. Also, I've been weaving for about 15 years, and most of that has been rug weaving. I never had formal teaching, just from books and the odd class. I have to say, after the first season, it is really liberating to weave this way. I think I wove this in less than a day. (The hemming is another story!) The long runner was the last bit I wove. I made it in big blocks, because I loved so much getting into that rhythm and not having to stop.
