On the Asymmetry project draft, what is meant by the Weaving Sequence instruction, "For your first sample please weave the warp sequence as your weft sequence"?

Hi, Diane. All that means is that you just weave the colour sequence you followed when winding your warp! Easy peasy……

In Episode 2.3 - the third video, about half way through - does Jane change the colors in the warp (the ones she wanted to use up), or did she simply use them in the weft, without tieing on new colors (as she did with replacing the red zinger)?

Hello! I’ve just started on the Course a couple of months ago and am now doing the asymmetric tea towels, having done some (very wonky) tea towels a while back. I do find the maths challenging. For the sett in the reed, I used 2, 1, as per Jane’s, but my acquired stash yarn is thicker and they are all around 24wpi.. it is currently only 14 inches wide so changing the sett will help, I 🤔 think. As I did not have a second grey, I used another white which shows up as cream during the day but disappears at night under my lamp - not so useful! I have learnt a lot doing this, as my initial black thread was too soft and snapped so I’m having to replace it with lengths two yards long, as I go.

Hi Raven, a couple of questions - what size reed are you using, that determines how you sley it. The thickness of your yarn also helps decide of your epi in your warp. Also, when you say you wrapped your "mystery" yarn 24 times around a ruler and that's how you got your epi for your warp? If you tightly wound it on the ruler without leaving room for your weft - then 24 would likely give you a very dense cloth. Look forward to seeing the answers to my questions :-)

Thanks Sandra. Size 12 reed. (I also have an 8 and a 10 available to use). I am using all cottons but all are un-labelled cones I’ve picked up at Guild and elsewhere. Yes, I suspect my fabric is really quite thick and I’m putting in six weft threads to achieve a half inch square. I could send you a picture of the tea towels I made previously using some of the same yarns and that resultant fabric is much more “open” and remained so after washing. From my notes, I see that I used a 10dent reed, one per dent for those tea towels. Those were months ago and the selvedges are untidy so I wanted to do some more with improved edges.

This is really an experiment to see what would happen. My loom is a Louet Erica and only 19 inches wide so I am not sure how much I can open the sett up - perhaps to 2,1,1,1 or something like that? Methinks this early sample would still be good for cleaning the floor, with such a dense threading! 😂

Having put in the three stripes of cream threads (the “white” that you can only see in daylight), I would now like to get rid of it because it does not go well with the other colours. It is more work but I think the cloths would look better without those yellowy smudges 😏. With over five yards of warp to go, that’s a lot of weaving I’m not quite happy with! Big sigh 😌………..

Hi again - sorry this is becoming such a challenge for you! A couple of things I would suggest you do is to try to stick to the yarns recommended in each draft until you are comfortable on your Erica. You've given yourself waaaay too many challenges for a beginning weaver. Following Jane's instructions will help you give you a happy result and make weaving the joy it is. In the meantime - check out Jane's solution to you changing that wee section of the warp. She covers exactly that in Season 2 Episode.2.3, at the 31:44 minute mark! Oh I do love, Ginette's Indexes that can be found under the Resources tab at the top of every School of Weaving page.

It’s amazing how you can change a warp while it’s on the loom, by changing it’s sett and/or using totally different colours as your weft! No tying on a different coloured zinger - although that is always an option. Have fun playing with colours in your weft!

A couple of comments, Jennifer ;-) If you are increasing the width in the reed to 21" - then you will increase the number of warp ends you will need and run out of bleached cotton for the warp and none left for your weft ( a 1/2 lb. cone has 1,680 yards in it). If you have more bleached cotton in your stash - you are set. The other thing that came to mind is that when you resley that warp to 12 epi to weave boucle samples, you will be getting close to 26" in your reed. Is your loom wide enough? You don't want to miss the magic that happens when you change the sett in your warp and discover the possibilities that are open to you with any warp you might be weaving by changing things up a bit! Hope this helps.

Deborah - you were doing everything correctly! Where you had a wee bit of a slip-up was in just not carrying on when you got to the middle of your reed. If you had just taken your warp out of your reed (sleyed 1,2) and continued sleying at 12 epi from the centre towards your left - you should have had a warp that was centred in your reed. Does this make sense???

Thanks, Nan! Ah, kittens! They are what doors were invented for. This little beastie is well beyond kitten hood, so we manage well enough. She helps gravity by holding down the cloth.

I’ve had luck with two pick and four pick stripes with boucle, no problems. I don’t know why your larger areas shrank more. Some things remain a mystery! The rest of the towels look great, such a nice colour combination. Well done.
