Hello, I have just started JST. My last wove was 45 years ago. And that was wonderful. I wove on a rickety homemade loom, 4 harness jack.
all self-taught from M. Black Key to Weaving. Note: not New Key to Weaving. HaHa.
Now I have a Glimakra Standard 8 shaft loom. I have not been able to do Tie Up since it was moved to me. I have 3 questions.
TIE UPS AND TREDDLESAll
question 1. my pattern is for 8 shaft towels. I have 8 upper lamms and 8 lower lamms. Are the two extra holes for the possiblity of adding 2 more shafts? or are they left unused.
Question 2. which is the better position for them. at front of loom treddle or back of loom treddle or one at back and one at front. I assume the positioning effects the shed height.
Question 3. I read all at knowledge base one person that said his method could avoid haveing to change tieup under the loom. I am not sure of his method on first reading, but i think that he was putting all cords on upper lamms and maybe lower lamms . it was the method from years ago and said that all future changes for patterns was would be made up by standing straight at upper lamms?
it is a real challenge for me to do the tie-ups under the lamms.
I felt that it was very complicated to start the tie-ups all from the upper lamms first. It was like walking through a spider web. I accidentally confused cords with upper and lower lamms when I was contorting myself .
To help i have ordered a spool of orange Texsolv and i plan on useing that for upper lamms. and keep white Texsolv for lower lamms
Hi accurate123,
Congrats on your new 8 shaft Glimakra loom! I haven’t woven or tied up a Glimakra and I’m not familiar about your question 3 and his method on how to avoid changing your tie-up. But with a countermarch loom, your lower lamms are your risers and your upper lamms are your sinkers. Have you contacted Glimakra for instructions? They have a few basic pdfs on their website that I found that might be helpful. Hoping someone with a Glimakra will chime in!
