Greetings everyone! I am brand new, both on this site as well as in weaving. I bought my floor loom before ever sitting at one last year. Sound crazy?? Anyway, I have a question about the 4/8 cotton. I would like to use this to make some hand towels, and so far, I am hearing about 2/8 only. Just dipping into season 2 and wanting to soon plan a warp. I thought maybe 4/8 with some boucle......I don't know. Would this be a mistake? I thank you for any input. I am so enjoying learning from Jane's years of experience and look forward to a future of weaving in retirement. :) Cheers! Judith

Welcome to our world, Judith! Jane has designed the School of Weaving to take you - episode by episode - through the steps of becoming a happy weaver. It's all about layering your knowledge so that you fully understand the process of weaving. You will soon be weaving hand towels/tea towels in 8/2 cotton (that is our go-to for absorbent tea or hand towels that drape nicely). We tend to use 8/4 for placemats, or heavier items. As you move through each episode and season, you'll find a lot of projects that Jane has created for us that will help you understand every step forward in your weaving journey.

Hello Judith - I have used 8/4 cotton to weave baby blankets with very good results. Tom Knisely's book ' Handwoven Baby Blankets' has some lovely patterns, but NB for the Rose Path twill blanket which I wove, he gives a sett of 16 epi, but this seemed likely to create too firm a fabric, so I used 12 epi and it worked very well. Re. Being crazy to buy a lovely loom...definitely not! The challenge is to get through the moments when you think that lovely loom may drive you crazy...as at least for me, 'issues' do arise every now and then...but that's when you come to this Forum full of helpful fellow weavers!

Thanks Katherine for your advice; quite helpful! Oh yes, I certainly have 'those' moments as well. In fact, I have had many of those moments; but I am learning through it all so it has been worth the effort. So grateful for this online learning opportunity and this forum. I have yet to search it all through, but as time allows, I shall plow forward. Have a great day!
