Jane, I attended some dyeing workshops at the ANWG conference in Bend this past June and dyed a number of different wool skeins, a superwash merino bionylon, a Falkland merino, and a BFL Shetland alpaca. skein. I'd like to weave a scarf with the superwash marino warp with an 8/2 cotton weft and am not sure what the sett should be. If I use the Master Sett Chart for a 90% superwash merino with 10% nylon the recommended sett for twill is 20 epi. Since this is a varigated color I dyed I think a twill weave would work best. I've watched your sett episodes in season 1/4 again and I'm not sure if there is a general guideline to follow when using different weight threads for the warp and weft. Also just finished weaving your monte cristo baby blanket and it turned out great. I'll send pictures. What a wonderful yarn! Thanks, Diane
Hi Diane, that's where the ruler wrap comes in - have you tried that? Also, another way to discover the yards per lb. of new yarn is to use a McMorran balance. We don't carry them in stock but I'm sure you could find one online. That way you would know the yards per lb and be able to check to see what the recommended sett is for each of the yarns. Depending on how fine your yarn is - you might choose to use finer cotton as the weft.
