This may be a very daft question in which case I apologise! I’m just starting to weave on my new David 3, first floor loom with most prior experience on a rigid heddle. When the cloth starts to wrap around the beam, do I need to pack the first few rotations with warp sticks as I used to on my RHL?

You don’t have to pack the cloth beam, unless your tying on knots are particularly bulky. In my experience, minor distortion that happens at that location will come out during wet finishing.
