I would like to know when is the best time to remove the lease sticks when warping back to front (which I have only done once). Is it better to remove them after sleying the reed but before tyeing on or after tyeing on? The only time I have done it this way I left the lease sticks in until after tyeing on but I think that caused some minor tension issues at the selvedge edges. Thanks in advance. Lee

I had the same question. I noticed that Jane left the lease sticks in until after tying on, but she didn't actually mention when to remove them. In later episodes, she is weaving without the lease sticks. I have seen suggestions online to leave them in during weaving as well, but Jane doesn't seem to do it.

I generally remove mine (warping back to front) after sleying my reed. I never leave them in while weaving as 1) it's not necessary and 2) it would reduce the size of the shed.

Life sucks right now. I stupidly removed my lease sticks BEFORE I threaded. *Slaps Forehead*.
Not only that, but I noticed that I needed more texsolve heddles on #4 shaft, and not remembering that I needed to stick the blocking pin in, I unhooked the top to "just slide more on" and whamo, everything went haywire. It looked like the cats got hold of it. There were tears.
I should have taken a picture. It looked like a disaster. Had to walk away and clear my head. Fast forward, and hubby to the rescue. Got it all back together and now I just need to get my cross back. I am halfway there, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope.
Don't remove your lease sticks until its threaded and slayed!

Oh My Deb, what a deal!

I take my lease sticks out after I sley the reed but before I tie on. I would think that weaving through the clothe with the lease sticks on would add to more thread abrasion.

LoL, As each disaster strikes, I stop, and take it as an opportunity to problem solve and get creative. I kind of enjoy that. It adds a little spice to my day.

First time, with the asymmetry kit, I left them in because I forgot. Finally took them out when my husband and I noticed it was harder to get a good shed.

But on this one, apparently my brain was not engaged. I jumped the gun and took them out too soon. Even my husband said, “Are you sure?”

I’m going to make a check list. That worked for the order in weaving: throw, beat, change, beater back. 😉

I have a Glimakra Standard. I used to take the lease sticks out after threading the reed and before tying on the the front rod. Then I took a class at Vavstuga and learned to tie the lease sticks to the back beam and keep them there until the warp is ready to come over the back beam. The theory is that if you have a broken warp thread that snaps out of both reed and heddle, the lease sticks will help identify just where that thread is supposed to go when doing the repair. I've done it this way once and it all worked out just fine. No tension issues while weaving. I did not, however, have any broken warp threads so I couldn't test out the theory. I love that there are so many ways to do things in weaving!!

This conversation was so very helpful as I learn to warp a new Louet Jane loom.

Update: I was warping my Louet Jane on its stand with the beater resting on the back and the whole thing crashed to the floor. A mess and I guess it was out of balance. With some help from my partner I restored the warp (and took the Jane off her stand, moving her to a counter)but it did dispell my confidence in the loom and the stand for my first warp on it. :-(

Oh no Julia. I wonder why this happened. My Jane bolted onto her stand is nice and sturdy.

That's a nightmare! Hope you can figure out how to fix it!
And I can imagine that Cheryl, who has been urging me to get a Jane, saying "OH! Now Deb will never want one!" LOL.
