I like the idea of using a shoebox to control the spools while preparing the warp. What kind of rods are they and where can I find them?
I've used straight knitting needles, but I've also seen chopsticks used with elastic bands at each end to stop them from traveling out of the box. This is a good "make use of what you have handy" kind of set-up.

Jane used the rods from her old Leclerc bobbin rack she has in the studio. They come in handy :) But like everyone mentioned, you can use knitting needles.
Shish Kebab skewers work too! :)
I use a wooden dowel through the holes in a peg basket.
