I am confused as to why Jane says 2/8 cotton in this video, and she said 4/8 cotton in a previous video, each time referring to the sett chart. Yet, the sett chart has neither. The sett chart has 8/2 and 8/4 cotton and listening more to each video I am able to deduce those are the entries on the charts to which she is referring. I just don't understand why it's written one way and spoken another. Thank you for clarification! :-)
Good morning Kelley, it's a north/south thing ;-) On this side of the border, we learned the original British terms for weaving but on the School of Weaving, we use the American terminology for yarn sizing for our wider audience.. Our roots go back in time to Britain and our earliest settlers were from England and France - the British English terminology stuck for English speaking Canadians. The "2" in both indicates the number of strands in the yarn and the"8" tells us the size of the strand. So, no matter how you say it, you have 2 strands of size 8 cotton in 8/2 cotton.
