Recently I went to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia and visited with the weavers. Outside their building was a warping board to embarrass all other warping boards. It was about 6.5 feet tall and at least 8 feet wide. You could make a warp chain 85 yards long on it. You would be exhausted afterwards though! You would have to step up on a stool to reach the top and it was a few strides from one side to the other. They told me that weavers of the time routinely created warps which were over 80 yards long. Hard to imagine, isn't it?

I bought a used horizontal warping mill from another member of the Seattle Weavers' Guild. It takes up the last smidge of room in my little studio when I unfold it and lock it together so it will roll, but I love the horizontal aspect of it. So much easer to use than a vertical one, as with the horizontal, as it rolls, all I have to do is rock back and forth and not have to lift my arms or bend down at all.
