Hello all - I am putting my new David III loom together and am having difficulty with the lams…specifically I cannot get the small red washer type rings (retaining clips) onto the metal bars- they just seem too small. Obviously it is possible to do it, and I have watched the instructional video from Louet on YouTube, but can’t seem to manage it myself. If anyone has figured out some ingenious way of doing this, I would love to hear from you! Thanks.
Assembling David III
Back again! If anyone has a 70cm David III could you please do me a favour (or even a ‘favor’ depending on what part of the world you are in!) and measure the exact vertical height from the floor to the holes into which the ends of the lams sit in the side of the loom frame. As can be seen in the photo I have included, on the 90 cm loom, there is an adaptation where a separate wooden piece is screwed onto the back of the loom frame at either side so that the lams ( which are the same dimensions as they are on the 70cm loom) can be slotted into the holes. Otherwise the loom would be too wide for the lams to be attached.
My question is - it looks to me like the precise height of the lam holes above the floor may not be the same as for the 70cm loom, due to the position of the ‘adaptation’ wooden bars. If it is not exactly the same, then it seems to me that the precise instructions on the assembly video re. how far to screw in the cup hooks on the harness frames will not work, as the distances between the top of the lams and the harness frames will be slightly different. It is because the demonstrators emphasises the precision needed re how far to screw in the cup hooks that I wonder about this….approximations don’t seem to be what’s required etc.
Hope that’s not all too garbled to make sense of. Anyway- if anyone can give me the measurement from the 70cm loom that would be very useful. Please include if the measurement is to the base or to the centre of the holes into which the lam ends are placed. Thank you and I look forward to your help!!
Latest issue is the beater which is not quite square so that when back against the harnesses, the left side is resting on the rubber ‘stopper’, but on the right side there is a slight gap. I watched the relevant Louet video and tried what they suggested. The small plastic inserts they supply with the loom were not enough to fix the problem, so, as they mentioned, I tried using cardboard and put in as much as I could until it was no longer possible to screw the bolt onto the barrel nut. See photo. As you can see in the second photo, there is still a gap between the beater and the rubber stopper on the right hand side. Maybe it’s just me, but this is the kind of thing that can drive me nuts….Has anyone got any ideas? I have contacted Louet also so maybe they will have some advice to offer. At the moment, I would have to say that my attitude to my new loom is summed up by the word ‘AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!’
Here is the photo showing the gap between the beater and the rubber stopper on the right hand side of the loom…even after putting cardboard in behind shuttle race on the left hand side of the beater.
‘Seek and you shall find!’……three cheers for Jane Stafford! After a bit more rooting around I came across some advice Jane gave on this topic back in 2016, so I followed it….and it worked!! Suddenly I feel calmness returning and hope returns that, eventually, all will be well! Thank you Jane and all who have helped so far in my starter steps along the path to eventually becoming a competent weaver.
Here is a screenshot of the advice that Jane gave backin 2016, just in case someone else has the same problem as I did.
