I've been gifted enough Harrisville Shetland Wool to easily make two wraps or a nice size blanket. I've never used it and it seems too fine for warp however I know that is supposed to be usable in a warp. What are the tricks to keeping it from breaking? I weave on a Oxaback Lilla countermarche loom if that matters. Thanks.
What a wonderful gift! Harrisville Shetland Wool is a delight to weave with and works well for warp and weft. Check out Jane's Master Sett Chart for sett suggestions that will give you suggestions to achieve a beautiful hand after it's been finished ......
My main worry is not sett but breakage, how strong is it for warp? Or do I assume that if I use the right sett it will have strength as warp?
The setts in Jane’s Master Sett Chart are setts she has used over the years with much success in both warps and wefts. There is never any guarantee that a thread or two might break but this yarn has been used by weavers as warp for many years. An open enough sett to allow for fulling means that the warp is spaced to allow the warp to move easily, without abrasion, from the back beam to your fell line.
just watched her video on sett and I think I now understand. I'll set it up as a sample on my Louett Jane loom before putting a full warp on the Lilla. Thanks!
