We will be relocating from Tucson to north of Seattle and I am wondering about boxing/storing a 2018 David II 90cm loom that has spent its entire life here in Arizona (and used only in the winter season). My first thought, of course, was to sell the loom locally in Tucson and purchase a David III after the move. However, I have not had any significant responses to my ad on the Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds (for local pick-up only - no shipping).

I do love this David II and am back to thinking about boxing it for storage with the other household items. I have a couple of concerns:

a) We will initially move to our small cottage with no space for weaving; hence, the loom must remain in storage until we purchase a larger home with a "loom room" (timeframe unknown). The first concern is potentially months-long storage in a much different climate (from desert SW to damp PNW) and its potential impact on the loom?

b) The other concern is how to pack the loom for moving and long-term storage. Looking at various moving and shipping boxes for TVs, large picture frames, mirrors, etc., it appears that depth of the box is a problem as most are under 6" deep and the loom would need at least 10" for the castle with the locking pin in place. Certainly, we could craft a larger/deeper box from these boxes (has anyone done this?) - or is a better option? Sadly, I did not keep the shipping boxes when I purchased the loom 4 years ago.

Your thoughts on these concerns will be much appreciated, and thanks in advance!

I moved from New Mexico to Vermont and didn't pack my loom in a box. The movers secured it with a moving blanket, and it made it to Vermont in perfect condition. Moving from a dry climate to humid climate did not have any adverse impacts on this loom. Good luck!

Donna, thank you for your quick reply. I am pleased to know that a similar change of climate did not have any deleterious effects on the loom. Since the loom and household goods will have to be packed and stored (likely a PODS or similar service), I was concerned about simply wrapping/protecting the loom with a moving blanket. Hence, my thought was to break it back down and pack it; ie, reverse the original assembly instructions.

But perhaps I am over-thinking this, and wrapping it securely in moving blankets before putting it into a "storage pod" will work out just fine. May I ask which moving service you used that handled your loom so carefully?

I went through a moving broker and the company came out of Florida, can't recall name. When the movers came to pack the van, I gave exact instructions about covering the loom and placing it in the van where it would not get damaged. The company was very responsible. Oh yes I did forget that we moved from New York to New Mexico and the same loom was moved with moving blankets, that moving company was Atlas, several years ago! The move from NM to Vermont was a private company, also very good. I actually think the movers were afraid of me if anything happened to my loom and they were not going to take a chance!!!! Stand tough and firm.
