Since getting my Louet David, I've gotten pretty good at adapting instructions written for rising shed looms, but one that still has me puzzled is how to manage pick up techniques. Specifically, I'm working through Jennifer Moore's double weave course and the technique she calls "quilting" involves using a pick up stick to create the charted pattern.

I made it work, but it was brutal. 😆 I'm going to continue to ponder a better way (the engineer in me refuses to admit defeat), but my efforts at googling a solution have yielded nothing useful. Any pointers would be most welcome.

That is exactly the point where I am just now, and yes somehow I got it working, but I stopped it after a few inches with a very simple pattern. It was so slow and I was never sure to get the shed correctly as it was so narrow. This way it is no fun at all and with a slightly more complicated pattern I would give up soon.

Is there any trick to get it right in a more controllable way or is this a real limitation of this loom?

Very late to this thread, but I just did this portion of Jennifer Moore's double-weave sampler. Here's the process I used to get through it. It was slow-going, but this system made it a little more efficient.

1. LIFT SHED (ONE HALF) OF ACCENT COLOR

* Put a piece of paper under the shed to more clearly see the strands to count out the counted design.
* Use a pick-up stick (PUS) to pick-up the threads based on the chart.
* Remove the paper.
* Turn PUS on its side to raise shed more.
* Slide double-pointed needle (DPN) in between shed behind the reed.
* Release treadle.
* Remove PUS at fell line (in front of reed).

2. LIFT SHED (ONE HALF) OF BACKGROUND COLOR
* Use PUS to place in between layers, making sure to not pick-up extra accent threads. (I had to manually pull up on the shaft to get a shed.) Only one-half of the background layer and picked-up accent threads should be on top of the PUS, which is currently at fell line.
* Turn PUS on its side to create the shed.
* Release treadle and pass the shuttle through the manually created shed.
* Remove PUS and beat.
* Remove DPN from behind the reed.

3. REPEAT STEP #2 FOR THE NEXT SHED (OTHER HALF) OF BACKGROUND COLOR

4. COMPLETE THE SEQUENCE BY THROWING THE PICKS THAT FORM THE BACK OF THE CLOTH

I am taking this class right now. I got the 4-shaft part down but I cannot get the 8-shaft tie ups to work. Opposites didn't work. I am getting just a mixture of colors and no real design. I am trying to figure out the logic of the sheds but everything I come up with is a dud. I haven 't even gotten to the pick-up sticks part yet.

Well, I did exactly what you suggested and I asked. She suggested using the tie up that she has for countermarch looms (ignore the X and tie up the O). I did this and it works!
