I am planning on making the placements of varying colors. The first and last three warp ends are the same color as the weft and the rest are natural. Should I change these end colors by weighting the first and last warp threads and then changing colors when I am changing the color of the placemats or would it be better to change colors as I am winding the warp or could I just make the first and last warp ends natural also? Wondering if anyone else made placemats of varied colors using the same warp?
The first and last three warp ends were dark to hide how kind of messy the edges looked, given the use of thicker yarn. If you are using lots of different colours for the weft, then choose a colour in the same value as the other wefts and use that for the first and last warp ends. The lighter value of the Natural against medium or dark valued weft yarns will make the messiness of the selvedges more obvious. Err on the side of a darker colour. That will look tidier.
I want to make two green, two blue and two coral placemats. I had wanted to use the same warp but maybe I need to create separate warps for each color so the first and last threads are the same color as the weft. I hate to have so much waste by creating separate warps. I was hoping to be able to make two placemats of each color using the same warp. Does that make sense?
I know there was an episode in the early seasons wherein Jane changed out a coloured stripe in the warp for a different colour, and showed the procedure to do so. You could make the warp with the first colour you'll be using for weft, weave those two placemats, change out the edge colours, weave the next two place mats, then do it again for the final two.
Sandra, you have a better working knowledge of the earlier seasons' episodes than I do, could you please chime in with where Jane does the stripe change out? Thanks!
Episode 2.2.3 shows how to change a group of warp threads while on the loom. This was the asymmetry towel project and Jane changed the zinger thread colour.
Many thanks! This is what I will try!
Hi Naomi,
It was at the 31minute 45 second mark that Jane does this (video 2.2.3).
