Hello all- I am just starting to practise the ‘throw, beat, change, beater back’ routine on my David loom, being in the very early stages of using a floor loom for the first time. I am trying to ignore the state of the selvedges to some extent, and have more uneven draw in than I would have had on the Jane, but the main question I have is about the weft thread tending to sort of ride up on the Selvedge thread when I have thrown the shuttle (see photos). I included a close up shot and also one from further away, to show the position of the fell line etc, ( as well as the very wavy Selvedge on the right :-( ….that I AM ignoring!) but I think it happens even when the fell line is closer to the cloth beam. Any thoughts? Thanks.
My own experience with this exact same dip is that it occurs when I mix tills and plainweave. According to Jane's Master Sett Chart plainweave with 8/2 cotton can be sett at 16-18 epi, whereas twills with the same yarn should be sett at 20-22 epi. That is because plainweave has the maximum number of interlacements, whereas twill has half the number of interlacements. Which means that plainweave takes up more space, and is trying to push out, while twill needs less space and is trying to pull in. Thus the dip. The way to avoid it is to only use very narrow bands of twill in your mostly plainweave, or vice versa.
Thanks very much for that information and advice ThatLoganChick. I understand how that would help with the problem of increased draw-in where a section of twill sits in the middle of sections of plain weave.
The other query I had was in relation to what is happening to the weft thread where it sits against the floating selvedge, following the throwing of the shuttle through the shed. E.g. if I am throwing a pick from right to left…
….imagine I have just beaten the previous pick, changed treadles, put the beater back….all is well…
….then I throw the shuttle across from right to left…and as it emerges from the shed and I catch it, and move it out to the left of the shed, and prepare to beat…I notice that over at the right hand selvedge, the weft thread has slid up along the selvedge line (see first photo).
This does not seem to be due to me tugging too hard on the shuttle, or drawing it out of the shed back towards me, rather than straight out to the left etc.
Maybe it doesn’t even matter that much, but I would prefer if the point of contact between the weft thread and the Selvedge remained ‘stable’ after I have thrown the shuttle and prior to beating the pick, rather than sliding around / moving away from the thread of the preceding pick, if you know what I mean?! By the way, I am putting an angle on the weft thread as recommended etc I think. Thanks.
