What is a good fiber to substitute for silk? I would think it needs to be strong and doesn't shrink much.

I agree with Sandra, check out Bamboo. I’ve used 16/2 in several projects recently. It has a lovely drape and a bit of a sheen. I’ve tried 20/2 cotton with sheen but it is much stiffer than the 16/2 Bamboo at the same sett.
