As weaving isn't very popular around here it would be so great to get in touch with other weavers.
Perhaps we could make orders together to share costs?
I'm looking forward to you,
Catherine
Any weavers from Switzerland/Liechtenstein here?
what about getting connected with knitters, as an option for ordering at least?
Thanks Cheryl, good idea.
Knitting yarn is available in a large variety but unfortunately most much heavier and only 50g balls. The really thin weaving yarns like Zephr, 18/2 merino are hard to find
Hi Catherine,
I moved from the US to Spain about a year ago and find myself in a similar situation. (There isn’t even a corresponding word in Spanish for loom.) Also I’m not finding a lot of yarn stores here either. However, I have been able to purchase directly from Venne, https://vennecolcoton.com/nl. If you don’t have one of their retailers near you, they allow purchases from their webshop.
Good luck!! Marty
Just a thought but have you looked at Colour Mart? They have a variety of yarns . from Europe and GB — Mill ends and they have a blurb on VAT and free shipping.
Down side, buy what you will need because you might not see it again and colors might be limited.
I’ve seen lots of knitters use their mill ends on Ravelry. Colour Mart could answer any questions which are suitable are for warp and weft since some of their yarns are probably from fashion houses who create from woven as well as knit fabric like loro Piano.
These questions makes me want to buy more yarn from our US companies. I don’t want the mills to disappear due to retirement or natural disaster like Brooklyn Tweeds former mill. I think Jaggerspun shut down one facility a few years ago as well.
Good luck!! Maybe you can also bribe a friend to load up a suitcase;)
Thank you nato, I haven't known this shop yet, but they have really a lot of yarns! For sure I will have a look there.
Marty, I asked Venne a few month ago and shipment is around 40 Euro for a parcel under 10kg as we are a Non EU country. I just wanted to recommend you wallmonte.de , an excellent shop with Brassard and some Venne yarns but as I have seen it is temporarilly closed due to serious illness and it's not sure what will be. So sad, she is such a nice person!
I have decided to try to dye on my own and ordered some yarns in UK at https://www.chesterwool.com/ but I haven't got them yet.
It’s taken me 35 years to get to Portugal but I’m finally here for a vacation. Our first stop was this shop in Porto called Saber-Fazer.
They have wool weaving yarn on cones. The colors are limited but they have a fine wool yarn that is close to the Harrisville Shetland. There might be a worsted weight too.
I bought a cone along with some skeins of yarn and I look forward to experimenting with it.
It’s all Portuguese sheep/yarn. They also have fleece and other miscellaneous weaving/carding/dyeing.
Their website is quite good though I question the mailer bag they ship in. Mine disintegrated while walking back in the rain.
Not sure how expensive shipping would be to Switzerland and if they would exclude the VAT for you.
There’s also the famous retrosario Rosa Pomar shop in Lisbon. It’s mostly knitting yarn. Maybe we can bombard them for coned yarn in the various sheep varieties she’s been promoting… someone is milling and spinning it. She wasn’t in the shop so I couldn’t ask.
I hope you had some luck!
Just looked at the back of the label— www.wonatur.com produced it for saber fazed but looks like they do for Burel (beautiful stuff) as well as other labels.
Hi nato, thank you so much! I'm happy now with chesterwool. Great service, beautiful wool and reasonable shipping costs. But it is still a big hurdle to calculate and dye everything. The advantage is that production is slowed down 😆
Also I found out that Harrisville offers an international flatrate shipping of 15£. That's really unbeatable.
