Hello. I am weaving a scarf/wrap as a gift, replicating the recipient's family tartan. I have never woven with linen before; the 16/1 is about the size of sewing thread. I was planning on doing a 2/2 twill, and the Master Yarn chart suggests 28 EPI for this yarn when making a twill. But remembering how Jane encourages us to open up the sett a bit to get more drape; I definitely want some drape in this garment. I will definitely put on a long enough warp so I can do some sampling and wet finishing before making the actual piece, but I'm wondering whether I should start with maybe a sett of 24? I have no idea how low I can go in the sett, I am hoping for a nice, light, drapey scarf. I know from knitting with linen that the garment should soften over time; any suggestions as to how to speed that up?
Hi Meridee. I've never woven with 16/1 linen and we don't carry it - so it won't be on JST's Master Sett Chart. It's heavier than our 40/2 linen so I can't really help you there but to suggest ruler wrapping and sampling. Maybe your source for that particular linen has sett suggestions on their website or you could email them? It sounds like you have a wonderful project in mind :-)
Thank you Sandra. The Master Sett Chart that I was referring to is from Handwoven Magazine; they pulled together the information for every yarn that their projects have used. Thank you for the reminder about ruler wrapping; I will try that out.
I’d still sample different setts and finish each sample to see which result you are happiest with. That’s only way to be sure you are getting the result you want on this special project. I’d forgotten about Handwoven’s chart - it is thorough but, the setts might be closer than Jane uses. Jane started opening her setts after seeing the marvellous and sometimes gossamer textiles of India.
