I'm planning on weaving a double-weave blanket in 2/2 twill on my 8 shaft loom. Has anyone out there done this and did you use floating selvedges on the open side of the fabric? How did you manage this? The floating selvedge on the fold wouldn't be an issue, but it seems using 2 floating selvedges on the open side (one for the top and one for the bottom layer) will be tricky. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Good question, and I am also thinking double weave blanket. What yarns are you using? I’m thinking. JST’s log cabin.

For this project, I'll probably use Harrisville Shetland if I can get the colors I need. But, I'd also like to do another one in cotton.

Jennifer Moore's book called Doubleweave it excellent and on page 111 she provides all kinds of information for a doublewidth 2/2 Herringbone Twill using Harrisville shetland.

You do not need a floating selvedge when weaving double width.

I have two double weave projects under my belt, but have also been thinking of tackling a 2/2 twill. At this moment I have no idea how that works. I will take a look at that link Jane posted and my Jennifer Moore book. Anxious to see how yours progresses, Kathleen. Please share pictures! :)
P.S. Harrisville Shetland is great for blankets, but I know what you mean about color availability. It seems the colors I want are always out of stock. Good luck.

One more thing. Be careful of mixing fibers. On my first DW project I had added some Alice Staremore Hebridean 2ply in with my Harrisville. Bad choice. Though they look similar, they do not play nice together. I ended up have to cut out a big section of my warp. Lesson learned!

Hi Deb, If you are looking at the Jennifer Moore book, the herringbone twill blanket instructions are only available in the original Doubleweave book. I have the Doubleweave Revised and Expanded edition and it doesn't include the the herringbone pattern/instructions (apparently the book actually shrunk instead of expanding!). But, I was able to track down a copy of the original book and I am now busy studying. And thanks for the tips!

Getting ready to do the double weave herringbone blanket and just found this thread. I am wondering if any of you have done it yet and if so I would greatly appreciate any pointers. For example did you use fishing line with weight at fold? Any tips?

I haven’t used fishing line but I do skip the second to the last dent and pull out one of the threads as Jane talks about.
I just pay close attention to the fold. Makes a big difference. I’m about to start my sixth double wide blanket which will be a birthday gift for our daughter. Mine’s just plain weave, though. Someday I’ll gather courage to do twill or something else. Right now I’m just trying to get back in the game after 4 months of no weaving.
