Hi, I have some 20/2 silk in my stash – but no 30/2 silk. If I were to use the 20/2 for the tabby in the overshot project would I need to open the sett further? I'm a little confused by the choice of threads in overshot, because in the master sett chart, 20/2 silk is paired with 8/2 cotton to make a balanced weave. If that is the case, can you please explain why has Jane chosen 30/2 silk? Thanks so much for all your help! Dennison
Hi Dennison, While Overshot does have plain weave between every pattern pick it is not as simple as plain weave. You have 2 wefts for every 1 warp. I used a 30/2 so the plain weave looked smaller and the pattern weft could stand out a little more. If you watch the episodes on Sett in Season 1 and 2 you will get a pretty good idea of how to play with sett. You could use your 20/2 for sure, the feel of the cloth will just be a little less drapey. I wouldn’t open the sett up unless you found it really hard to beat. I can’t quite remember what I sett those scarves at but let’s say it was 15 or 16 EPI….then you would have 30 or 32 PPI….15 or 16 or both of the tabby and pattern. I am away on holidays for a few weeks and don’t have the pattern in front of me. Sampling is really worth the effort. Hope this helps. Cheers Jane
