I have some sock yarn that is 90% superwash merino wool and 10% nylon. I have made a couple of scarves with this using a sett of 10 for both plain weave and 2/2 twill. Both are wonderful, thick, squishy winter-type scarves. However, I have been intrigued with the color and weave gamp that we did in Season 2 Ep. 4. I loved the one where I opened up the sett to 12 and used boucle for the weft.
So...I am thinking of opening up the sett to 8 for this sock wool and using 8/2 cotton boucle for the weft. I specifically want the more open, soft lighter weight piece that I got with the C&W gamp I mentioned earlier. I'm second guessing and wondering about opening the sett up to 6, but then I wonder if the 8/2 boucle would be enough for that?

I am planning to sample, but I'd like to at least be in the ballpark before I go through the work of putting it all on the loom. I'd love any ideas or experiences anyone has.

I did some sampling today, and the 6 epi was just too much using boucle as the weft. I increased it to 8, and it's perfect. It was the boucle that was causing me to second guess because it's so much smaller than the wool. Thanks for your help!

Carey, how is the stability of the weave structure with the super wash in the warp and the cotton in the weft? Do you notice a marked difference with weaving a superwashed wool warp compared to a regular wool yarn warp?

Barbara, the superwash used as warp and weft with a sett of 10 epi and 10ppi is extremely stable. Gorgeous. The warp in superwash with a sett of 8 epi with a cotton boucle weft at 8 ppi is quite a bit looser and drapey, but still stable. I lost the stability at 6epi. I can't comment on the difference between the super wash and regular wool yet. I've been hoarding the regular (expensive!) wool until I feel I have mastered the superwash (read cheaper!) wool! :)
