Want to use stash of 6/2 cotton. Would a sett of 20 epi be ok?
The difference in the size of the yarn is significant, Irene. Our 8/2 cotton is 3,360 yards per lb. and the 6/2 I found on the web is 2,520 yards per lb. - and therefore significantly thicker. For your 6/2, you would have to open up your sett so that you would not need a hard beat that would be difficult to weave resulting in a very dense cloth. You could sett it at 18 or 16 epi but it would be best to use your ruler wrap (rewatch Season 1 Episode 4 - Let’s Have a Little Chat About Sett) to see how Jane gets a happy sett. As you open up your sett, your towels get wider - 18 epi gives you a 25" in the reed, and 16 epi gives you 28" in the reed. You could redesign your warp by removing some of the stripes to reduce the width of your finished cloth. You have an interesting challenge ahead of you and I'm sure the towels will be wonderful. Please post photos ;-)
Hi Irene, 6/2 is quite a bit heavier than the 8/2 we used. I would do 18, maybe even 16.
Thank you, Will try 18 and remove 2" off strips. Resleying to 16 is not hard if it needed.
Don’t forget that width in the reed is not the finished width. Use the width in the reed and the finished width from the pattern to give you a guide as to how much you might want to reduce your warp. 😀
