My first time weaving with Baby Alpaca (both warp and weft) and something went awry with the wet finishing. I did the wet finishing in a sink with warm water and Dawn dish soap pretty much like I usually do. It is obvious that I over-did the wet finishing because it is felting in places. I did not notice any issues with tension during weaving and I wove the same treadling throughout the piece. The thing is that I have another blanket with the same warp on my loom right now so I'd really like to learn what might have gone wrong so the it does not repeat with the other blanket.

Oh dear. A while ago I did a deflected double weave project with all baby alpaca, and though I didn’t have the finishing issues that you had, I hated weaving it because the warp kept fraying and I can’t tell you how many repairs I had to do. I love alpaca, and others here can tell you how much I love it and use it but I will never use it as warp again.

Did you agitate it when you soaked it? That would cause felting. Or maybe it was the detergent? I use a soak that is meant for yarn.

You could try resoaking - no swishing just soak, then rolling towel to gently squeeze water then block the scarf to reshape.

I find alpaca to be a grower/sagger in knitted form. Admittedly, I haven’t woven with it yet— next on the list.
