I am planning to weave some Double Weave scarves with 30/2 merino super wash. The yarn wrap was 19, which suggested 18 or 20 ends per cm (45 or 48 ends per inch). As I wasn't sure, I made a small sample warp and threaded the reed for 20 epcm. On the loom the weave looked good with a little space between the threads. The weft was 20 ppcm too, so all good.
But after washing in cool water, the sample shows a sort of moire pattern where there are different colours in warp and weft. Is this caused by the wrong sett? Or uneven beating? See photos of unwashed cloth and the washed version. Any help much appreciated.

Hi Mary, hoping others familiar with superwash will chime in. It looks like some of the threads shrunk more than others in the washing process. It does add a neat look to it though.

I made another small sample on the same warp re-sett to 24 epc (60 epi) and it did improve the appearance of the blocks, although not entirely. So I think the 'moire' effect is due to both the sett and the uneveness in the beating. See photo link. https://ibb.co/DDyCG1SX
However, I prefer the handle of the 20epc cloth, compared to the 24epc which is a little firmer. In both samples the front and back blocks cover each other well and look sharp. The 24epc isn't a balanced plain weave, so Ive decided to go with the 20 epc (22 is a fiddly number to deal with when the blocks are each 4 shafts.
