Hello all - in my Baby Blanket book by Tom Knisley he gives 16 epi as recommended sett for Rosepath twill blanket in 8/4 cotton. However, Jane seems to recommend this sett in 8/4 cotton for where a very firm weave, such as for placemats, is the aim. Having never used 8/4 cotton before, I would love some advice on this from all you experienced weavers out there! I don’t want to weave a blanket and then find that the poor child finds himself being wrapped in a very large placemat….or alternatively, I would have to scale that famous beanstalk frequented by Jack in the well known fairytale, and present the now ‘well proportioned’ placemat to the giant who lives up there, to place under his enormous bowl of porridge each morning…..and then again, maybe word would spread and I could corner the world market in handwoven placemats for giants….always good to be versatile……

I wove a blanket following the sett suggested in Tom’s book. It had no drape at all and it was too stiff for a baby blanket. I reslayed for the second one and it was fine. Unfortunately, then it was too wide for a baby blanket but fortunately I had enough warp to make a lap blanket. I couldn’t pass the first one on to a giant, because I am not acquainted with one nor with Shrek. Trust Jane’s suggestions for sett.

Hi Lise - thanks very much for that useful information. Can you remember was it 12 epi you used in the end? I haven’t actually put the warp on the loom yet and have a couple of bouts still to wind on the warping board, so I may end up just leaving one of them out to avoid that problem of the blanket being too wide. My loom has a maximum width of 90 cm so am limited by that anyway.

I was at the beginning of my weaving journey and was not taking notes as I should have. I am so much keener now at making notes! But I do remember following one of Jane’s epi suggestions for 8/4 cotton and reslaying my warp.

Hi Katherine - have you checked Jane'e Master Sett Chart? Jane recommends 12 epi for a nice drapey cloth that can handle many trips through the washer and dryer....

Hi Sandra- yes luckily I did check Jane’s Master Sett Chart! That’s what made me wonder about the 16 epi sett given for the 8/4 pattern in the book….and not for the first time I have thought ‘no problem…I’ll just get on to the School of Weaving Forum and someone will help! Thanks very much and my plan now is to go with the 12epi option. Of course if I was a REALLY good student, I would weave a sample first….hmm.
