Could someone please explain what a shuttle race is? What does it do? I've never heard of it.

It's a piece of wood, or track, that is attached to your beater that the shuttle can run along, thus avoiding nose dives through the warp. It is a life-saver and one of the reasons I abandoned rigid heddle weaving as they don't generally exist on those.
