I am going to weave some scarves using 20/2 silk and being that it is a very delicate yarn what do I use to hold the silk as a floating selvage. I generally use pill bottles but I think they may be a little harsh for the delicate thread. Is there a suggestion of what I can use? Alternatively using a stronger thread like a 8/2 cotton would it be better without taking away from the look of the silk scarf?

This may not be the right answer, but silk is extremely strong. I would think it would be fine as a floating selvage. But don’t take my word for it. I’ve only used it in the weft so I can’t speak from experience.

You can add floating selvedges to your warp when you wind it and they will be fine. Or, depending on whether it will affect your design - just leave the two outside threads of your warp unthreaded. That way you don’t have to hang them off the back of the loom.

I know 20/2 silk to be stronger then 8/2 cotton.
The other option (for me) is 8/2 Bamboo because it has a similar sheen.
I use S hooks to weigh them (both silk- bamboo and even cotton).
