I am working with a warp that may make me lose my mind. After having to add threads because I didn't read the pattern correctly, the whole thing was just a tension mess. I'm in the process of pulling it forward through the heddles and reed and re-braiding it so that I can re-beam the whole thing. As I'm trying to re-beam though, I'm noticing that small chunks-maybe 1" wide-are twisting themselves together. It's a pain when I'm trying to smooth and get the tension right to re-beam.

Is this the "twist" I've seen referred to when using a cone stand that's taking thread from above the spool vs. laying the spool down and pulling from the spool from the side when warping? This is a longer warp than I usually do, and I'm wondering if that's why I'm seeing it? Is it that important which way the yarn feeds when warping?

How many ends did you wind at a time and were you careful to not add a "twist of the wrist" when you were winding the warp? The yarn can travel smoothly from a cone on the floor or from a tube that is on a set-up so that the yarn is just flowing directly from the tube. In my weaving life - I need to be aware of my hand that controls the yarn as it moves onto the board/mill - I'm easily distracted ;-) There does come a time when you can do the math - find out how much $$ you have already invested in that warp. Decide whether the lessons you have learned in practising with that warp are worth the $ you have spent on it. Then move on to a new warp all that practise under your belt!

I had some twisting on my last warp, too. Maybe it was the full moon.
And it WAS the first time I'd warped with more than one thread at a time. I had trouble with that last peg, too. I may need to re-watch the warping episode. :/

A small amount of twist is not a bother at all. If you look a the Colour and Weave gamp where I was warping with multiple ends I intentionally showed everyone the end of the warp and what it looked like....it proved my point that the twist just keeps moving back...or maybe occasionally I had to move it back, but not a lot. The reason this is so problematic for Carey is because she is trying to move everything to the front and I'm assuming she is doing it after it has been threaded and sleyed....then it can be a problem.

I too had a terrible experience with threads twisting on my last warp. I wound three ends at a time and ended up with “ropes” of 20-30 threads twisted around each other behind the heddles so I couldn’t advance the warp at all. It took me two days with tabby sheds and lease sticks in place to work the twists out and re-beam the warp. (They’re very fine cotton threads sett at 75epi, and I’ve never used this particular thread before. It’s meant to be used for lace making.) I’m using the same thread for the tabby weft and it’s twisting back around itself as I weave.

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately sewing thread is heavier than the lacemaking thread. I’ve never experienced over twisting when using it for lacemaking, but it’s much easier to dangle a bobbin and I probably just didn’t notice. I’m doing overshot with cotton tabby and wool pattern weft so I guess I’ll just have to use this up and not buy it again. Not sure where else I’ll find such fine cotton though. I was thinking it must be over twisted. Btw, I can’t wait to try diversified double weave from the last class!
