I just put the second warp on my Toika Eeva horizontal countermarch loom and when I pulled out the holding pins, I was left with a mess. The shafts all decided to go there own way and my shed is filled with threads. I have an 8 shaft Turned Twill warp on it ( doing the Turned Twill tea towel pattern). My first warp was a 4 shaft plain weave pattern and the same thing happened when I pulled out the holding pins but there was some what of a shed, which I was able to straighten out by adjusting the shafts from the jack above. I am finding that the 8 shaft warp is not as easy as the plain weave 4 shaft warp was to fix. I am not sure why this is happening?
I have Joanne Halls books and I have the Big book of weaving, which all help a little bit, but not enough.

Ty for your response Jane, I checked and my two sets of lamms are tied up correctly. But I do think my shed problems are due to the tie up of my treadles. Tying up the treadles was so physically difficult for me that I petty much just put the anchor pegs in by eye. I have to go back and see if I can figure out how to comfortably get to the treadles. I think I can also make adjustments at the lamms because I can raise some of the lamms by putting arrow pegs under the white and black beads that I used to denote the difference between the upper and lower lamms.

The cords are supposed to be the same length, but do not seem to be all the same length. The cords came in a kit. Maybe I should make all the cords the same length? Toika products and looms are wonderful but getting information from the company about them is literally impossible. It may take me forever, but I will figure it out.

I would hate to say, yes or no to that because I don't know the loom at all. I have never woven on one.

I have that same loom. The upper lamms need to slant upwards, and the far end of the upper lamms will actually be about 2" below the bottom of the shaft bar. The lower lamms will be horizontal. Glimakra looms do it different. If you go to the Toika group on Ravelry site, there are several topics that might help. I had just posted about my poor shed and got help. A group member sent me a couple of write-ups on the loom. One was interesting but I didn't follow those instructions. I basically followed the one from one of the WEB owners, who sell the looms. Then there is the thing with tying up the treadles! There are some tricks to that too. One of my fellow guild members uses knitting needles under the treadles to thread the tie up. You need to have a bit of slack for the first several shafts for each treadle, and they tighten as they go to the back of the shafts. I believe that aspect is mentioned in Ms. Hall's book.

If all else fails over the long haul, there is a system that people use, called "Woolhouse 20+". Its mounted on the back of the loom, All the ties are channeled to a panel mounted on the back, where it is easily assessable for tying up. It takes a bit of doing to install, and a lot of texsol. I'm not sure who makes them anymore.

Oh Yay!!! You have given me some suggestions too. I will be taking out all the cords and setting up the Vavstuga system sold by Becky Ashenden, that uses knitting needles. I went ahead and bought it, even though I might have figured it out for myself. I like your systematic approach to problem solving. I have taken my cords down several times, taken the whole shaft and jack system apart, etc. over the last few months. Every time I do this I learn something. I too, wanted jack up the front end to get to the underside of the treadles. I haven't done it yet, but I will shortly, as the loom is ready for a new project. I have only been working on 4 shafts and I'm ok with this. I am a beginning weaver since December. With the Toika since feb or march.

Questions:
1) how big of a block did you use for the front end of the loom?
2) I have access to 6x6 wood blocks to put a non-skid pad onto, for the lift. would that be enough?

Good morning. I was just doing a web search online to find help with an issue on my Toika Eeva (8shaft, 10 treddle) and thought I would connect. I have been weaving for over 12 years on a variety of looms (Baby Wolf, Harrisville, and more) .... yes it's a disease! I a got the Eeva about 1 year ago as my only loom (wanted a sturdier loom for rugs, but also able to do fine weaving). This is my first countermarche loom. Note: it came with a Woolhouse 20+ unit on it for easier tie up. I knew it would be a challenge. I have primarily done 4-6 shaft projects on it with minor issues I was able to resolve.

I just put on the warp for the Bronson Lace Block Analysis scarves. This is an 8 shaft project. Here is my issue: I have done the tie up (with locking pins in)). When I pull out the locking pins things look good. When I go through all the treadles to check sheds, the 3rd and 4th upper and lower lams go wonky - the upper lam goes down and the lower lam goes up. I have spent hours trying to think logically as to what is causing this. So many variables. It seems to me that it has to be an issue with any of the cords related to Shafts 3 & 4. But for the life of me I can't see any issues.

Any suggestions? My brain is fried and my warp is on, ready to go.

I'm sorry, I have no thoughts on this. I have only used 4 shafts so far. I have mine tied up as "top o' the lam" and you can find info on Ravelry on this. I think its in the Warped Weavers group.

Well I think I figured it out. There were a few texsolv cords that were catching - along with being more thoughtful about the sequence of my tie ups. For as simple as the CM loom is, it's incredibly complicated. And as you've experienced climbing into or under the loom to make adjustments is a challenge. There is a Toika group on Ravelry that you may want to check out. I have discovered that there are not many Eeva weavers out there.

Yes I follow the Tokia group too. But iirc the best info on tying up the lams was on the Warped Weavers group. I also got good information from a Ravelry member that she emailed to me. That too was from the Warped Weavers group I think.

Thanks for that info, Barbara. I had found the Warper Weavers group a bit overwhelming to follow, but I'll go back in to do a bit more of a search. But for today I hope to sit down and actually start weaving!

Yes all this info is overwhelming for me too. I have benefited from taking a learning break and getting onto a doing activity. Then when I go back to the learning I have more insight and experiential information.

Hi Tricia, I measured the left most texsolv cord that I used at the treadle to the lam and I got 26". The right most length is about 30". But I have a lot of slop/extra in the length. Im not sure if you'll need that much. I'd try the ONE 26" at the right side and see if it will work, and if it doesn't you can use it at the other end. I'd also only do a few cords initially - such as, at the right, the left, and a center treadle, ( 3 lengths) to check it out.

As I understand it, the lams tip up from the pivot point on the left, to the right end being raised about 4". I went into a lot of detail on Ravelry in the Toika forum, about that and I have pictures there too. Here is the title of that thread, "Eeva Loom with interfering Lams". I don't think I got any feedback. But it seems to be working for me. I am only using 4 shafts. I have not got the other 4 set up yet. I hope to do so this winter.

To connect the texsolv, I used an anchor pin under the treadle. Then an arrow peg at to lam, I want to activate. There is a knot I put in at the top of the cord so it doesn't drop through the lams. There is slack in the length with my setup. Im not too sure if I need that much. Remember that the cord is threaded through both lower and upper lam, but you only peg the lam you want to activate. The slack in the cords has not been an issue. I don't know if these pictures would help.

Thank you so much Barbara. I am going to put a warp on the loom and then try to tie up using Top of the lams. I put a question on the Facebook Toika page asking how people decide which holes they use for the lam rods at the pivot point. I hope someone responds soon.

Here is where I have mine. I got the loom from a guild member, and she had it set up this way too. I tried moving it when I had the lam collisions, but moved it back and put the slant in the upper lams which I had inadvertently taken out. previous owner had the loom set up like this, when I look back at pictures taken at her home when I picked up the loom. The lams where at a slant. And her lams positioned in the rods like I have mine.
