My Schacht loom was made around 1986 or 1987. It has 10 treadles and I am wondering why the extra treadles. There seem to be 6 on a lot of standard Schacht looms. I usually use 6 treadles. Is there a possibility that the extra treadles could be tied up so that I can increase the number of shafts that I am able to weave on.

Having extra treadles on a 4 shaft loom is a real bonus. There are 14 possible tie-ups for the 4 shaft loom. 13, 24, 12, 23, 34, 41, 123, 234, 341, 412, 1, 2, 3, 4. There are some 4 shaft structures that really benefit having more tie-up options, like supplementary warps, twills, some of the laces. In many episodes we use more than 6 tie-ups to get all the different effects possible. Some Schacht looms allow you to add more shafts but the castle must be built for that. I’m not sure if your loom was. But even if it wasn’t, it is great to have the extra treadles with 4 shafts, as you will see as you go through the episodes. Hope this helps. Jane
