I'd like to weave a cotton blanket with a 4/8 cotton warp and 8/8 cotton weft, plain weave and twill structure. What do you recommend for the sett? Jane's master sett document has 12 EPI/PPI for placemats. Does 10 EPI/PPI make sense? Thanks in advance
Sett for Cotton Blanket with 4/8 warp and 8/8 weft
I would sample first, before putting the full sized project on my loom. This is a non-standard yarn combination, with the 8/8 being very plump and rounded, whereas the 8/4 is smoother and lays flatter. There will be a lot of textural difference. Also, if you plan to combine twill and plainweave you need to consider that plainweave pushes out much more than twill as it has twice the number of interlacements as a 2/2 twill. So if you have columns of plainweave and columns of twill in your warp, you will need to sett them differently. If they are rows in your weft, be prepared for the plainweave to bulge at the edges and the twill to pull in. So sampling beforehand is your best approach. Remember to wet finish your sample the way you will wash/dry the blanket later! This sounds like an interesting project, so please come and share a photo when you are finished. We'd love to see it.
