Recently I have been pondering how to incorporate some 85% silk/15% bamboo yarn into a weaving project. Probably considering a scarf or shawl as the project. Haven't settled on the structure as yest - however I am thinking along the lines of lace or twill.
Done my wraps in several ways and have come to the conclusion that the yarn would match a sett for 20/2 silk; 8/2 cotton or bamboo.
The yarn is quite a bit more 'rounded' in profile in comparison to, say, Bambu 7 which is a flatter profile and has more loft or 'squishiness'. It therefore also has a bit more weight to the yarn in comparison to bamboo.
Along the way of my musings, hemming and hawing's, I have revisited Jane's Master Sett Chart on many occasions. In so doing, I have noticed that within the Master Sett Chart, the pairing of silk with another yarn has mainly been - Silk = Warp and Weft = other yarn e.g. Cotton or linen etc. [Rarely is that order reversed (there is one example of 16/2 Cotton Warp to 30/2 silk weft and 16/2 Cotton Warp to 12 gauge bambu Weft). There is also an example of a 20/2 silk and 8/2 cotton warp combined with a 20/2 silk and 8/2 cotton weft.]
My question(s) are this - is that silk warp combined with another yarn as weft by design or accident? Does the Warp/Weft order suggest that the silk behaves better as a warp than as a weft?
I can imagine if the silk is a 'heavier' yarn it would drape better as a warp rather than as a weft. I can also imagine if the yarn is 'slipperier' then it would change its behaviour if it was a warp or a weft.
I am probably overthinking things - and the general answer will be "Sample and find out". But it still doesn't answer if the Master Sett Chart observation is correct or not.
Maybe someone could ease this troubled mind? I would much appreciate it.
And thanks for taking the time to read this tome of a thread.

Hi Diane .... Jane often uses cotton or linen as the warp with silk as the weft. You'll see it in kits that she has designed, like Sweetheart Bronson Lace where the warp is 8/2 cotton and the weft 20/2 Bombyx silk and set at 16 epi and ppi.
Personally - I love a 40/2 linen warp and 30/2 silk weft. I'm getting ready to put on a 40/2 linen warp, that has been dyed in an indigo vat, and will be using silk to give it the drape I want in a scarf.
Either way is fine - just go with what works for you!
Thank you Sandra for your reply.
I haven't ever purchased any of the kits, so it wasn't even on my radar to check (silly me).
Your personal take on things was also very helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to point me in a more informed direction.
