I am a newish weaver working on Season 5 - the twill tea towels. Try as I may I can't seem to understand what Jane means when she talks about 'framers.' I am very confused and would deeply appreciate an explanation of what makes something a framer (nor not) etc.
Look at season 2.2.1 around 12 minute mark.
Season two is where Jane talks design elements and different ideas.
Yes, okay she is talking about framing in the way that one would frame a picture. But in the twill discussion she constantly refers to framing when she is working say with stripes and I can't see the difference between the 'frame' stripe and what she is framing. Also, the frame seems to switch from one thing to another.
Hi! It's been awhile since I did this project. From what I can recall and based on my horrible notes you would tie up your treadles in a way that you could create a horizontal frame and a vertical frame around a block or blocks or maybe across the whole towel depending on how it is tied up. (I am most certain my explanation will get me an F in weaving school).
The framers might also look different. The frame may change directions or it could be weft or warp dominant or broken twill or.....
Do you recall which towel that she was weaving in the section that you were watching? Go to that PDF with the towel # and also look at the corresponding tie up.
Hmm, I should wind a warp and reweave this. It's been awhile since I wove a turned twill. Sorry, I am sooo terrible at explaining.
You've done a great job explaining, nato and you've got it Tamar! Basically, when Jane puts lines of colour around or beside a particular part of the cloth she wants to feature - she calls them framers.
