I just took my first set of hand towels off the loom that I want to try machine stitching the hems instead of hemstitching as I wove. I'd like opinions on two things:
1.) wet finishing in one continuous piece or zigzagging the ends of each, cutting and wet finishing once separated
1.) wet finishing before or after sewing

Hi Sheryl. My preference is to zig zag between each towel, cut , wet finish and then hem.
Which towels did you weave, and from which season? Will you post a picture?

When I do a towel warp, I put 5 or 6 picks of a contrasting color between each towel. After cutting off the loom, I use my serger to finish both ends of each towel as it cuts them apart....toss them in the washer and dryer... steam press and hand sew the folded hems.

I wash and dry the entire warp and then zigzag between each towel before I cut them apart. Then I machine hem or hand stitch. I like to leave the warp in one piece so the shrinkage happens over the entire piece. You can zigzag and then cut them apart but I would not hem before washing as you could end up with a ruffled hem from the shrinkage.

My washer tends to twist up long pieces of fabric, so I always separate my towels before the first wash.
