I ordered some "Hand Woven by" labels to attach to my towels when giving them as gifts. I'm having a really hard time getting them on. I've tried blind stitching (the label edges fray), tacking the label down in several spots (the thread sticks up where I've knotted each tack), and finally machine stitching (not using the treadle but just moving the wheel by hand). It's a struggle with trying to hold the label in place and sew it straight. Maybe I need to order wider labels.... I would love to hear your suggestions and/or experience with this. .
Great that you asked. I just did the very same thing. The ones I will buy next time are folded longways and can be stitched into the hem. All the raw edges will be neat and tidy. The drawback is they can’t be used for hanging towels.
That is a great idea! I'm going to stop putting on the labels and order some that fold longways. It is so frustrating to have a nicely woven piece and have the label look so messy. Any suggestions as to where to order?
Oops - since my hem is already done, I'll finish up this batch first.
Not yet but let’s keep talking. I got my labels on Etsy and asked if they did folded and they said no. There are many other vendors I will start looking.
There are a ton of them on Etsy. I got my non folded ones there, and I’ll probably go back, but to a seller that offers the folded ones. It’s hard to decide though, because there are sooooo many options.
I’m on the hunt for new labels as I hate stitching them on the way I have been which has been a narrow zigzag all the way around. No matter how I do it—and I’m pretty experienced at sewing—they never look that great. I like the idea of the folded ones in a hem.
Here’s another related question… do your labels have care instructions on them? My current ones don’t and I’m on the fence as to whether to get some that do. Problem with that is I weave items with difference care requirements.
What does everyone else do?
I either tell the recipient how to take care of it or send a note. I can see that you would have a problem with different care requirements. I've seen some where they have a care instruction attached with a string and safety pin or something similar. Easy to remove and to refer back to when washing.
I sew on the labels as I'm doing the hems. These labels are folded in half and I ship a letter of thanks and care instructions with each purchase. And because the fold makes a "loop" I'm certain some folks hang from the tag.

That is exactly what I need! Thank you. I'm anxious to check out the site. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Kit! Those are great!
I just received the "Hand Woven by" labels that I ordered from Jennifer's Jewels via Amazon. I love them! They look great and will be so easy to sew into the hem. I'm excited! Thanks again, Kit, for the link.
I got mine from Jennifer's Jewels too and I really appreciate that she ships extras, since she printed them already.
